It’s funny how we seem to subconsciously filter our closets. The brand-new stuff goes in front and center. The older touchstones of the weekly rotation get slotted in right behind—the AG skinny jeans that are faded to the shade of a partly cloudy May afternoon, the Red Valentino striped sweater that always cuts a flattering silhouette no matter how many workouts you skipped that week and the Free People leather moto jacket that would make you look badass if you wore it over a pair of XL sweatpants and UGGs. The older-still, but still-useful, pieces fill in around them.

And then there’s the clothing that once formed the very heart and soul of our looks for an assortment of reasons. Maybe they fit like nothing else you’ve ever owned. Maybe they drew a barrage of compliments. Or maybe they’re tied to a particularly deep-rooted memory. There’s no wrong reason for holding on to clothing. Eventually, once we’ve had time to square ourselves with practicality, we’ll donate it and move on.

There’s another category, though, that seems to forever linger on the fringes. We’re constantly aware of its presence, yet we never reach for it. Which is a shame, because they’re great-looking things. The kind of things for which we couldn’t believe our good fortune when we stumbled upon the sale or the very last one, buried at the back of the rack, like someone was trying to hide it for safekeeping. But it’s a size off. In some cases, two. Or there’s a slight tear along one of the seams. And so it sits, waiting for what? That day when you grow another four inches taller?

At least, this is how you envision it playing out every time you step into your closet. What you face instead is a snarled morning commute—10-year-old tops competing for rack space, sandals blocking the path to your boots and drawers stuck half-open, gorged way beyond their capacity.

Every morning, after an over-complicated routine, you dress, close the door behind you and think, This’ll be the weekend you organize your closet.

Get Your Life Organized and Your Body Healthy NOW!

If you’re like a lot of people, you started 2017 by making some New Year’s Resolutions, such as “Clean up my house” or “Eat a more nutritious diet.”

But now that we’re almost three weeks into the new year, how many of those resolutions have you kept and how many have you broken? Did you even bother to make any resolutions at all?

It’s not uncommon for people to break their New Year’s resolutions, even as early as January. You know you want to change your life. You know you want to declutter your home or eat better and lose those unwanted pounds. And yet you continue to put everything off.

Procrastination is one of the biggest obstacles to becoming the best version of yourself that you can be. But it’s not an unsolvable problem. There are actually three things you can do to get yourself moving on the right track.

Start Small

One of the main reasons we procrastinate is that we think about what we need to do as one giant task: “Clean up my house” or “get into shape.” And when we think of it that way, it can seem overwhelming, like climbing a mountain. But any big goal is made up of a bunch of smaller goals. And some of those goals can be broken down into even smaller goals.

You don’t have to climb the whole mountain at once. All you have to do is do is take a step. Move one thing in your living room. And then move another thing. Every time you do that, you’re taking a step forward, and every step you take—no matter how small—gets you closer to your goal.

Do Something, Anything

A lot of times in life, we put things off because we’re just not sure where to begin. We can easily get so bogged down in trying to figure out where to start that we simply end up not doing anything.

The answer to “Where should I start?” is “Anywhere.” Start with the easiest thing, the thing that’s closest to you right now. Pick it up and move it somewhere. Then pick something else up and move it somewhere else. Instead of pondering what would be the best place to start, let your eyes, hands and feet do the thinking.

What you’ll find is that by doing one thing, you can actually move closer to another goal at the same time. This is especially true of home organization and healthier eating habits. 4 Ways To Declutter Ahead Of A Move

Moving and packing is stressful. It is even more stressful when you have a lot of items that you don’t know what to do with. You know what I’m talking about, the clutter that accumulates over the years and continues to pile up. The vase from your husband’s aunt, the knick-knack from your cousin. Clothing that was last in fashion a decade ago. Threadbare towels. DVDs. When was the last time you even watched a DVD?

Fear not. This brief guide outlines four simple ways to declutter for a move.

  1. Stage a rummage sale

Unload your unwanted stuff and earn a little cash for it in the process. Win, win. Now, you’re decluttering for a move and covering some of its cost. Just keep in mind that your primary aim here is to end the day empty-handed, not with a wad of bills in your back pocket, so price everything to sell fast.

  1. Spread heirlooms among your family

If you are downsizing, space will be critical, so you’re going to have to start prioritizing your possessions…even the heirlooms, actual and the stuff that just holds a lot of sentimental value.  Obviously, you’d prefer not to sell or donate anything that’s been handed down through your family for generations, so start asking your siblings and cousins if they have any interest in it. They’re your first line. Your closest friends are your second. The sentimental stuff especially is likely to be just as meaningful to your friends because they’re the ones you interact with most frequently. Even if they didn’t have a hand directly in those experiences, they may still remember them.

  1. Donate to local organizations

Yes, it’s convenient to toss your unwanted things, especially in the frenzy haze of moving, but it’s wasteful. Best-case scenario: A small fraction of it will be recycled. The remainder’s going to be plowed under at a landfill. If there’s still some wear left in your clothes and some use in your household utensils and accessories, donate them. Scheduling a pick-up with a charity, these days, is even easier than trashing your things. Now you’re moving them to the front porch instead of all the way out to the curb. And you’re helping any number of people.

  1. Auction them off online

If you’re a planner, you’re probably preparing to pack for your move weeks in advance. With that kind of lead, you’re buying yourself ample time to separate what’s coming with you from all that’s not. So add another couple of steps and turn a profit. Snap a of photo of each unwanted thing and post it to eBay, or list it on Craigslist. You’ll be amazed what there are markets for. That said, the aim here is the same as having a rummage sale: to end up empty-handed. So price to sell. And don’t be swallowed by the process. Packing’s a big enough chore. If you find yourself devoting too much time to shipping your stuff or meeting with potential buyers, scrap it and go with the rummage sale instead.

Remove everything!

Here’s how you go about it: Focus on a particular area. Let’s use the bedroom closet as an example here. Now, remove everything in it until all that remains are bare walls, shelves and a rod. Then, start filling it again, but as you replace the items, make sure to only keep the stuff that you expect to need in the coming year. It may seem a bit harsh, but it’s necessary. Allow yourself the chance to come up with an excuse to keep something and you’ll be less likely to get rid of it.

Keep this in mind: Getting rid of the unimportant stuff helps us see what’s actually important that much more clearly.

Organizing the essential

Once the clutter and excess has been cleared from your closet, organizing the remaining items is easy! It may be a startling sight at first—when it comes down to it, there’s very little that we really need—but you’ll grow used to it quickly. Especially once you realize that organizing your closet now means straightening a couple pairs of shoes, a handful of accessories and maybe color-coordinating a few tops and pants. What once took you the better part of day (if you didn’t put it off), will now take you less than 10 minutes.

Cleaning Up Your Life, One Square Foot at a Time

Decluttering your home has become a major theme in the past decade.

In turn, many methods have emerged for paring down the material possessions that once comprised your life and now consume it. Some, naturally, are far more effective than others. The approach that suggests talking to an item, asking if it would like to stay, may not get you very far. But if you tend to avoid confrontation, it’s about as gentle as breakups get.

By contrast, one of the best solutions to declutter your home is to clean an area by the square foot, or even the square inch. Doing so not only makes the task feel more manageable, it forces a closer examination of the area in question.

Whether it’s a desktop or a countertop, looking at a certain area by removing everything that sits upon it compels us to assess the value of each item. How you rate them will depend upon your own private value system, but we’d like to make a recommendation: Only keep the things that are valued in one of the following ways:

  • It’s beautiful and/or it gives you pleasure
  • It’s useful in some practical way
  • It’s necessary for record-keeping

If an item doesn’t meet these criteria, either give it away or throw it away. You’re basically decluttering your house as if you were decluttering it for a move. In fact, a move is one of the rare occasions when we find ourselves motivated enough to strip down to the bare essentials. A move’s a fresh start. And who wants to lug even one more box than necessary?

If you can approach each surface, each drawer and each cupboard with this same mindset, you’ll find yourself with a lot more breathing room in no time. You’ll be surprised, once you get there, just how much all that stuff was weighing you down, figuratively and literally.

CLEARING THE WAY TO WELLNESS

Hello again!

I tend to think of what I offer as a profession like this:  I am the only professional organizer in Los Angeles who wants to organize your home AND your stomach!

Iffff you’re even thinking about calling or hiring a professional organizer, or you say to yourself, “I need help organizing my home,” you’re probably already sooo overwhelmed and very tired of your current living space.   Any organizer, including me, can get your home or office beautifully organized, and you’ll love the results.  But…it’s highly unlikely you will stay organized.

Here’s why!

If your refrigerator, freezer or pantry AND your stomach look like the countertops and cluttered masses around your house, the energy you need to stay focused and organized simply doesn’t exist, and it will SUCK your energy dry without long-term results.  Yes, what’s in your refrigerator and your stomach is directly connected to your ability to stay focused and organized!

Think of it like this…your home can be a representation of the inside of you as well.  It needs attention and intention on a daily basis.

There is a huge tie-in, and an ah-ha moment waiting to happen, when people learn that the state of one’s home is the state of one’s mind (and gut!).  Oh, man!  Really????

One client, a real estate agent, started to cry and say to me, “No wonder there isn’t that special someone in my life.  There’s no room for a man in my life!”

Ladies and Gents, it’s impossible to get organized in your health if you are surrounded by clutter in your home.  The decluttering has to come first before dealing with “unhealth,” unless, of course, we are talking serious illness.

There is usually something behind the major clutter…maybe instead of “drinking about it,” you think retail therapy is healthier?   Well, it is for your body but not for your pocketbook (!) AND it leads to unbelievable, sometimes insurmountable, amounts of clothing, clothing that has to be dealt with.  Or maybe it’s art on the walls? Regardless, wouldn’t you say less is more?  Ohhh, I would say much much more!

Have you lost your job or had an emotional breakup?  Maybe you’re a product of the Great Depression and feel a sense of abundance when surrounded by “stuff”?  Well, whatever the “reason,” it is still clutter and it is still ruling you, and there is a big impact on your life, I am sure.

How many times do you just reach for whatever there is to eat because it’s the closest food item within reach?  Or maybe it’s fast food for din-din tonight because you know it’s going to be rather difficult to even attempt to make dinner, let alone one that is healthy?

Messy Home, Messy Health!

Do you ever wonder why you feel so down, depressed, overweight, and unmotivated in your life?

Try this on for size, (if you can fit into it!)…One huuuge culprit I see on a daily basis is people who are disorganized in their homes are usually disorganized in health, fitness, and nutrition as well.  There is a saying in the nutrition world…”It’s not what you’re eating; it’s what’s eating you.”

Really, you say?  Yes, really!  The two go hand in hand like peanut butter and jelly.  Naturally, if your kitchen is neat and organized, you’re much more inclined to reach for healthy food items vs. the quick-fix, canned, processed and refined foods.

This concept is not a well-known one, but it’s so widespread, sadly, and is an extremely important component to healthy living, on the inside and the out.  Without it, we simply go through the motions of daily living without any joy, freedom, and ease.

My background as a professional residential organizer since 2002 and a holistic nutrition consultant since 2010 has brought me confirmation and also firmly to the realization that this sly little triangle does so much damage to the soul, wreaking havoc on all important areas.  It doesn’t matter whether I show up to someone’s home as an organizer or a nutrition consultant…one almost always overlaps the other.  I know the minute I go into one’s home what their schtick is..  Disorganized home, disorganized gut, disorganized mind.

The impact of these three areas of life being out of sync creates huge heartache for my clients.  There are three areas that I see that are most affected, and in a particular order, I feel, they are health, entertainment, and relationship.

Ask yourself:  Why are you putting up with this?  To quote Groucho Marx, “If you’re not having fun, you’re doing something wrong.”

These are major areas of our lives, wouldn’t you say?  Without these, we are living subpar; we are surviving, not thriving. We are just downright unhappy!

Is your home your sanctuary, a place you enjoy coming home to?  If not, why not?  What are you not dealing with that needs addressing?

How many more mornings can you wake up wishing you didn’t, and how many more days can you tolerate that your clutter is ruling you vs. you ruling your clutter?

An even bigger question is…what is the impact of this triangle?

These are all very important questions that should say to you, “What the heck am I doing?”

Gluten Intolerance

Talk about being given a spoonful of your own medicine…  Practice what you preach, I say!  Where was I to coach myself on this fated day?

First, let me say that one of the first things I do with a client is take them off of good ol’ modern wheat, gluten, and dairy as well (to feel the comparison), the top three allergens out there and the biggest culprits of sooo many of today’s illnesses and conditions.

FYI, I have been pretty much gluten- and wheat-free for 7 years… and very minimal and sometimes completely devoid of dairy as well; my friend has abstained for approximately two years now.  Occasionally I can be tempted to splurge and eat a roll and butter, say, when out to dinner or sample a couple bites of something with gluten, but for the most part, this little pretty LOVES being free of these inflammatories!  The cure:  Those of us in the industry just eat gluten-free foods.

It was a lovely Sunday afternoon, and my best friend and I were getting together for a day of play to enjoy some yummy wine and a meal somewhere, while enjoying the sunny So Cal weather too.  A girls’ afternoon out.

After imbibing, we went to a favorite local Italian restaurant, famous for their incredible chopped salads but also loved for their typical Italian dishes and deeeee-lish sourdough bread.  The best!Gluten allergy stomach upset

My friend did a great job of persuading me to go ahead and say, “What the heck” in response to her saying to me, “Along with the chopped salads, do you want to order the glutenous Spaghetti Carbonara dish” (that I haven’t had in probably ten years) and just suffer afterwards?  Ha, ha.

Sure, that sounds great!  Right then is when that inner voice needed to kick in!

Because I – and many others — don’t have celiac disease, (the permanent intolerance to gluten) or what I will call the “extreme manifestation of gluten sensitivity,” we can have a little – key word “little” — bit of gluten here and there, and it doesn’t really bother us.  But I have to admit, I am pretty much a gluten-free girl.

Now, it’s important to know that if one takes gluten, wheat and/or dairy out of their diet, even if just for one month, I have seen dramatic symptoms manifest in my clients when they say, “What the heck” or words or expletives resembling those!  It has the same effect or can have the same effect, so to speak, as a vegetarian saying, “I think I’ll eat a piece of meat.”  The body says, “Whooooooa. Wait a minute.  What are you doin’?”  It’s not pretty.  There is a far more evident reaction the less someone eats these foods with these ingredients.

Healthy-Food-weight-loss-program-Gluten-freeSo…we ate those awesome chopped salads and their bread (with gluten), and a giant dish of pasta (with lots of gluten).  Tasted grrrrreat at the time.

The next morning, I woke up feeling like someone beat me up in my lower back and punched me in the jaw.  I called my friend, and I said, “How are YOU feeling this morning?”  And she said, “Oh, my god, my knees are killlllllling me!”  She also felt the symptoms of a sinus issue.  I then felt very achy, flu-like achiness, that entire week, but I never got the flu.  Now, I know allllll of this as a nutrition consultant, but as you can see, I was being human… and stupid, I might add.  I rarely get sick, but this inflammation lowered my immune, all the while not getting the flu but then ended up with a wonderful cold.

This was probably the dumber of things I’ve done in a long time as it takes about three weeks for gluten to exit the body.  I called a popular lab just to confirm my symptoms with them, and they (the symptoms) were right on par!  I was going to have to wait for a few weeks for these awful side effects to disappear.

For someone who really does eat like a saint and doesn’t deviate too much, this was verrry frustrating for me.

Sooo, you ask what is gluten?

Here’s the scoop:  1 in 3 people are gluten-sensitive.  Modern-day gluten, found in wheat, barley, rye and some oats manufactured by “undedicated oatmeal companies” is a very difficult protein for people to digest.  It is, they say, 400 times the concentration of protein than it was when our moms and grandmas cooked with it, and most of it is genetically modified.

It has many unhealthful qualities, #1 being an inflammatory.  The body has a very difficult time breaking this down, and the body perceives this as a toxin.   If you have aches and pains or joint issues, pay attention as gluten is a HUGE culprit when it comes to aches and pains. If you have any auto-immune illnesses, then it is imperative that you eliminate gluten.

There is a very specific need for taking gluten out of the diet.  The conventional world doesn’t really know or think about this, but we say that no one should be eating gluten.  My clients get great results, and immediately, when taking this out.  Believe me, the results far outweigh your desire to go out on a nice Sunday afternoon and say, “What the heck.”  Was it worth it?  Nope.  It really wasn’t.

I learned a big lesson, and one that I can share with my clients.  We always have to learn the hard way.  Next time, I will listen to my inner voice and just be happy with a wonderful glass of wine and my deeee-lish chopped salad!

Hi Everyone,

It’s almost that time again!  Do you start cringing as the holidays approach, thinking how will you balance your eating habits with still having fun??

I’d love to answer your questions as to how to do that;  so Ask the Nutrition Consultant and break free from worrying that you’ll wake up January 1st having to go, yes, on a — yuck!! –big fat d-i-e-t!!

Notice:   The word DIET has the word DIE in it!!!    You’re saying, “Been there, done that, done!!!”

Little-known morsel:  Remember, if your kitchen is organized, you are much more inclined to reach for healthy food items vs. those quick-fix, canned, processed and refined foods with hydrogenated oils, high fructose corn syrup, and genetically modified ingredients, to name just a few!
